American jazz guitarist Pat Metheny plays in the Kieler Schloss. The concert “An Evening with Pat Metheny”, presented by JazzBaltica and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, has been sold out for weeks. Bassist Martin Wind, born in Flensburg and a loyal fan and companion of Metheny’s, speaks about the exceptional sound of the exceptional guitarist.
Pat Metheny’s jazz guitar sounds soft and almost floating. No one had played before him when he presented his debut album “Bright Size Life” in the mid-1970s. It was a turning point in the history of jazz. One of his fans was living in Flensburg at the time and was still at school: bassist Martin Wind, who has since emigrated to the USA as a professional musician.
Martin Wind: From Flensburg out into the world
The flying double bass: Martin Wind likes to show the versatility of his instrument, to which he can elicit a certain lightness despite the deep mood.
The 1968 born in Flensburg musician was already at 21 one of the founding members of the Federal Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer.
He studied at New York University in the 1990s, where he has since been a lecturer in the jazz department. He is booked as a studio musician for film music, but also plays a lot live in large concert halls and small Ney York jazz clubs
His talent, versatility and love of jazz and classical music make him one of the most sought-after musicians in his genre. He has participated in countless recordings and concerts with greats such as Christoph Eschenbach, Monty Alexander or Pat Metheny.
With Pat Metheny Wind in Trio with drummer Jochen Rueckert has opened the 2003 JazzBaltica Festival. The concert was also a pre-concert for the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival 2003.
“Somebody is singing through his instrument”
While Martin Wind played the records of his idol in Flensburg, Pat Metheny became more and more successful. With his band, the Pat Metheny Group, he won in 1982 the first of a total of 20 Grammys. He experimented with free jazz, hardcore and world music, but above all, his music has something disarmingly vulnerable, Martin Wind enthuses: “Pat Metheny is a musician who is not afraid to show his inner life, you hear that sound, you hear that sound and it moves something in you, it creates images in the head and I have the feeling that someone is singing through his instrument.”
