CD review: McCoy Tyner-Freddie Hubbard Quartet – Live at Fabrik Hamburg 1986 – 2022: Video, CD cover

Kick-off of the new “Live At Fabrik Hamburg” series on JAZZLINE in cooperation with the legendary venue and NDR Kultur – the concert with FREDDIE HUBBARD and MCCOY TYNER from 1986.

In 1986 the master trumpeter FREDDIE HUBBARD was a guest at the Altonaer Fabrik in the trio of one of the most important pianists of contemporary jazz: MCCOY TYNER, whose extremely powerful touch always added percussive power of the most energetic kind to his virtuoso playing. MCCOY TYNER died in March 2020, the recordings of 1986 (when he was 58 years old) show him at the height of that unmistakable jazz expression that characterized him.

His piano and the enormous radiance of the trumpet of HUBBARD (of the same vintage 1938 as TYNER, but already deceased in 2008) are the outstanding protagonists, but also bassist AVERY SHARPE, born in 1954 and acoustically as well as electrically well proven, as well as LOUIS HAYES, still today, with far more than 80 years, the most indestructible of all modern drummers, ennoble the nine titles of this more than two-hour concert evening to the highlight of an epoch!

1. Inner Glimpse (11:15)
2. Announcemet (0:43)
3. Latino Suite (14:36)
4. Body and Soul (14:53)
5. Nero-Terra (25:48)
6. Island Birdie (17:44)
7. Round Midnight (14:44)
8. Blues For Basie (17:11)
9. What Is The Thing Called Love (10:14)
