The Jazz Foundation of America will present “A Night of Soul,” its annual Loft Party at Hudson studios: Video, Photos

... in New York City on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 pm. In keeping with the “Soul” theme, the lineup includes Gladys Knight, Nona Hendryx, Soul Banned (featuring Ray Parker, Jr., Ronald Bell, Mix Master Mike, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Steve Jordan and Isaiah Sharkey), Soul Understated (featuring Mavis “Swan” Poole and Jeremy “Bean” Clemons) and Davell Crawford.  Keeping it real on the jazz side of things will be the Wallace Roney Group (featuring Gary Bartz, Patrice Rushen and Lenny White), the Guitarist Summit (with Marc Ribot, Mary Halvorson, Vernon Reid, Bill Frisell and James “Blood” Ulmer), Jazzmeia Horn, Matthew Whitaker and teenager Alexis Morrast, whom the Jazz Foundation bills as “the next Billie Holiday.” Among the hosts for the gala concert are actors Danny Glover and Rosie Perez.

Proceeds from the annual event go toward the organization’s programs that support jazz musicians in need—from housing and emergency assistance to pro-bono medical care for uninsured musicians. The organization also offers a jazz in the schools program and hosts jam sessions. Wendy Oxenhorn, the executive director of the Jazz Foundation of America, was named a NEA Jazz Master in 2016 in recognition of her work with the organization on behalf of jazz artists.
