Deluxe Reissue of Sonny Rollins’ “Way Out West” Out Feb. 16: Video

60th-anniversary box set includes previously unreleased outtakes, candid studio talk. On Feb. 16, Concord’s Craft imprint will release a 60th-anniversary two-LP edition of Sonny Rollins’ classic album Way Out West, featuring the Saxophone Colossus with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne.

The original LP was released in 1957, on the Contemporary label. A landmark recording, it was deeply influential for its stripped-down, harmonically open “strolling trio” format, and for Rollins’ inventive repertoire choices, which, like the funny, slyly mischievous album cover photo by William Claxton, reflected the saxophonist’s love for Hollywood westerns.

This reissue, packaged in a hinged box, will include the album, sourced from the original analog tapes, as well as a second LP including previously unreleased outtakes and two tracks of candid in-studio talk. It also features liner notes by acclaimed jazz writer Neil Tesser, based on a new conversation with the artist, and will be available on iTunes, on various streaming platforms and in Hi-Res digital formats.
