Like Bing Crosby, Andy Williams was often mistaken for being a square. To kids growing up in the 1960s and ’70s, he was about sweaters, holiday specials and conformity.

He also was seen as TV’s surrogate parent—oblivious to issues kids were going through, emotionally distant and quick to demand that old rules be followed without discussion. Now that boomers are grown, Williams can be appreciated for his astonishingly beautiful voice, an effortless command of harmony and unshakable grace.
