Interview with Hubert Dorigatti: Unfortunately, there is a lot of envy and resentment among musicians

Interview with  guitarist Hubert Dorigatti. An interview by email in writing.

Jazz Blues: – First, let’s start out with where you grew up, and what got you interested in music. How exactly did your adventure take off? When did you realize that this was a passion you could make a living out of?

Hubert Dorigatti: – I started playing the trumpet when I was about 8 years old. I knew early on that music would be important in my life. At the age of 11, the guitar came into my life and soon after I discovered the blues and Afro-American music and I fell in love with it immediately.

JB: – How has your sound evolved over time? What have you been doing to find and develop your own sound?

My sound has changed a lot over the years. I loved bands like AC DC or Led Zeppelin, so I played electric guitar almost exclusively. Later I discovered acoustic blues, for example in the style of Mississippi John hurt, and then I played mainly acoustic guitar.

JB: – Have you changed through the years? Any charges or overall evolution? And if so why?

Of course, I have changed a lot over the years. As a teenager I loved the rock blues, then came the acoustic blues. when I started studying at the conservatory, I discovered jazz. I love guitarists like Jim Hall or John Scofield. Now, after all these years, I have found my musical language. A mix of blues, singer-songwriter and jazz.

JB: – In your opinion, what’s the balance in music between intellect and soul?

Basically, the music should come from your soul. But then you need the mind to bring everything into a form, which is very important for the listener. In any case, it should be a good mix, just going by intellect would be wrong.

JB: – There’s a two-way relationship between audience and artist; are you okay with delivering people the emotion they long for?

I think I can convey my feelings well to the audience. I’m not reserved on stage, I try to express all my feelings so that I can reach the audience. If the audience then reciprocates my feelings, I am all the happier.

JB: – How can we get young people interested in jazz when most of standard tunes are half a century old?

Well, that’s a good question. I don’t have a patent remedy for that. I try to do it by being honest and authentic on stage. I try to give my students access to jazz music.

JB: – John Coltrane once said that music was his spirit. How do you perceive the spirit and the meaning of life?

Music is certainly very important in my life, but I have many other things that make my life very beautiful: Nature, family, friends. A good mixture of these things, that’s my elixir of life

JB: – If you could change one single thing in the musical world and that would become reality, what would that be?

Unfortunately, there is a lot of envy and resentment among musicians, and I would do away with that.

JB: – Whom do you find yourself listening to these days?

I’ve discovered a few musicians in the last few months, for example Ariel Posen, who I really enjoy listening to.

JB: – Let’s take a trip with a time machine: where and why would you really want to go?

I would like to go back to the beginning of the 20th century and get to know musicians like Robert Johnson. I would like to take a walk with him to the crossroads.
