Interview with Kirky TG: Without passion, the music is lifeless and mundane

Interview with guitarist Kirky TG. An interview by email in writing. All very bad, not music, only trash!ha

Jazz Blues: – First, let’s start out with where you grew up, and what got you interested in music. How exactly did your adventure take off? When did you realize that this was a passion you could make a living out of?

Kirky TG: – I was born in Santa Monica, California, and grew up in Quartz Hill, California. I discovered a passion for music around age 10 and started out on piano, then I picked up guitar at age 16. I knew at 19 that this could be a career and what I wanted.

JB: – How has your sound evolved over time? What have you been doing to find and develop your own sound?

This has been a big thing for me. I’m an artist with sound waves and started developing my sound and tone when I was about 20. I don’t copy other musicians’ licks and focus on the underlying musical elements and structure.

JB: – Have you changed through the years? Any charges or overall evolution? And if so why?

I’ve become more confident in pursuing my own style and defying convention and expectation. I’ve blended more Jazz, Classical, and Grunge in my approach. My development has been organic, and a reflection of how I feel the music and hear it in my head.

JB: – In your opinion, what’s the balance in music between intellect and soul?

Ideally, it’s a perfect equilibrium. Without knowledge and insight, the music lacks sophistication, cohesion, and artistic principle. And without passion, the music is lifeless and mundane.

JB: – How can we get young people interested in jazz when most of standard tunes are half a century old?

By playing/presenting the music in a modern, organic, authentic, and soulful manner — rather than attempting to duplicate prior interpretations.

JB: – John Coltrane once said that music was his spirit. How do you perceive the spirit and the meaning of life?

I agree with John. The music I play is a manifestation of my emotions and mood. The reason my music sounds the way it does is because you’re hearing a sonic representation of my psyche and spirit. The meaning of life is what we give it — for me that’s family, art, and advancement of society.

US/EU Jazz Blues official albums chart update – What are the leaders?

JB: – If you could change one single thing in the musical world and that would become reality, what would that be?

That we each find our musical voice and the industry sees artists as uniquely valuable rather than commodities.

OUR US/EU Jazz and Blues Association

JB: – Whom do you find yourself listening to these days?

Albert King, Magic Sam, Wes Montgomery, SRV, Nirvana, Allan Holdsworth, B.B. King, Bill Broonzy, and many others.

JB: – Let’s take a trip with a time machine: where and why would you really want to go?

The late 1950’s along the Mississippi River! Would love to experience the live sounds of so many of the Blues’ greats — and life without so much digital noise.

JB: – All very bad, not music, only trash!
