Herbie Hancock confirms star-studded new album is coming: New video

After months of speculation, Herbie Hancock has confirmed he’s working on a new album, with an all-star cast of musicians from the West Coast of the US.

Not for the first time, the 77-year-old jazz keyboard legend is crossing genre boundaries into funk and hip-hop, with stars including Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Thundercat, and his current Musical Director Terrace Martin. Saxophone giants Wayne Shorter and Kamasi Washington are also said to be working on the project, alongside electronic producer Flying Lotus, guitar and voice wizard Lionel Loueke and Indian tabla player Zakir Hussain.

Speaking to the San Diego Tribune this week, Herbie said “I’m learning a lot from the young people I’m working with, because they built the new structures, social media and that whole arena, and that affects how you get things out in front of the public to let them know you’re working on something. So I’m still learning, which I’m very happy about. I never want to stop learning.”

The album currently has no title or release date.
