The 2020 Winter Jazzfest, which runs through Jan. 18, presents myriad vantage points for music discovery.

Last Thursday, Friday and Saturday, WBGO broadcast a series of live performances and interviews from the space, a sleek alcove off the lobby of the Moxy NYC East Village, a Winter Jazzfest sponsor hotel. We streamed these sessions on Facebook Live.

Ben Williams: I Am A Man

Bassist and composer Ben Williams also steps out front as a vocalist on I Am A Man, an album releasing on Rainbow Blonde Records on Feb. 7.

He gave a preview here, with saxophonist Marcus Strickland, guitarist David Rosenthal and drummer Justin Brown. And he discussed the resonant theme of the album with fellow D.C. native Keanna Faircloth, host of Afternoon Jazz.

Ben Williams will present I Am A Man at Rough Trade in Williamsburg this Friday, as part of the Winter Jazzfest Brooklyn Marathon.

Brandee Younger

Harpist Brandee Younger is was a natural fit for this series, drawing from the recent album Soul Awakening. Her band has Chelsea Baratz on tenor saxophone, Anne Drummond on flute, Dezron Douglas on bass and Russell Carter on drums; she spoke with Brian Delp, the host of Midday Jazz.

Nite Bjuti

Nite Bjuti is an experimental project featuring three fearless women from the African Diaspora: Candice Hoyes on vocals, Mimi Jones on bass and Val Jeanty on turntables and electronic percussion. They performed on Afternoon Jazz — and spoke with Keanna Faircloth about the spiritual dimension of their music.

Sarathy Korwar

One of the leading figures on the burgeoning London jazz scene, drummer / percussionist / producer Sarathy Korwar grew up in India, and his music often embodies a reflection on migration and assimiliation. He performed on The Checkout with Simon Rentner, drawing from the album More Arriving with saxophonist Pawan Benjamin, keyboardist Al MacSween and vocalist Zia Ahmed.

Niels Broos + Jamie Peet

This groove-based, free improvising duo comes to us from the vibrant Dutch scene. Broos, whose previous affiliations include Jameszoo and the Kyteman Orchestra, is a keyboardist and producer; Peet is a precision-minded yet volatile drummer. They performed spontaneous compositions on The Checkout, and talked about their process with Simon Rentner.
